Most calls fall into a few groups. Some washers hold water in the tub or quit before the cycle ends, and others never begin the spin, so the clothes come out soaked. Water sometimes shows up near the door, the dispenser, the hoses, or underneath the machine. Others light up and won't start, fill slowly, or flash a water-flow code, and a few stay locked when they shouldn't. Then there are the machines that bang, grind, or squeal. Each of these can have several causes, so I test the washer before I recommend anything, and you'll hear exactly which part failed and what it costs to fix.

If a washer is flooding, stop the cycle and shut off the water valves only if you can reach them without standing in water. Don't touch the plug, the outlet, or the controls while you're standing in water. If you see smoke, sparks, or smell burning, stop using the washer and call me after the danger has passed.

Six Things Every Whirlpool Washer Owner Should Know

Don't try to hold a shaking washer in place. Pause the cycle, wait for the drum to stop, then spread the load evenly before restarting.

If the door or lid won't release, give it a few minutes. A washer stays locked while water is in the tub or the drum is turning, and forcing it open can snap the latch.

Look for shipping bolts on a new or recently moved front-load washer. If the bolts or packing are still in place, the drum can shake the machine hard enough to walk across the floor.

After any plumbing work, check that both water valves are fully open. A half-open valve makes the washer fill slowly, and that looks like a broken washer when it isn't.

Take a photo of the display the moment a code appears. Some codes clear when you turn the power off, and the exact letters and numbers help me find the cause.

Keep laundry baskets and detergent bottles off the top of the washer during the spin. Vibration walks them off the edge, and a falling bottle can crack a control panel.

Front-Load, Top-Load, Whirlpool Washers

Whirlpool makes front-loaders, traditional top-loaders, and high-efficiency top-loaders, and the controls, door locks, and access differ for each. Please tell me which kind you have, and whether it has an agitator, since that changes what I look at. If the washer is stacked under a dryer, in a closet, or tucked under a counter, tell me that too, because access changes the job.

The part I install carries a one-year warranty, labor included, and the written warranty spells out the terms. A different part or an unrelated problem that shows up later isn't included.
