The Older Whirlpool Ovens With an Ignition Electrode

Some older Whirlpool gas ovens don't use a glow bar. Instead, they use an ignition electrode, the kind that clicks a couple of times before the pilot catches and signals the main burner to light.

If that's what you've got, try this free check before you call. Open the bottom broiler drawer and see if it's packed full of pans or cookie sheets. The wire that powers the electrode runs right past that drawer, and a pan pressed against it can break the circuit completely. I've found this exact issue three separate times over the years. Pull the pans out, try the oven again, and if it fires up, you just saved yourself an $89 service call.
