Two Kenmores that look alike can be very different inside, which is why I begin with the model tag and a description of what the appliance is doing. I run an independent shop with no tie to Sears or the Kenmore brand, so a Kenmore that is still under warranty or a protection plan should go through that coverage first.

If water is spreading across the floor, stop the appliance first, and close the supply valve only when the floor around it is dry. If you smell gas, go outside before anything else, then call your gas company or 911. If you see smoke or sparks, or smell something burning, power the appliance down and stay away from it. Five Things Every Kenmore Owner Should Know

The numbers at the start of a Kenmore model, ahead of the dot, hint at which company built it. Read me the whole number anyway, because the full number is what settles it.

If your Kenmore is still covered by a warranty or a protection plan, call that company first. Covered work shouldn't cost you anything.

The model tag isn't in the same spot on every Kenmore. Look only where you can see it without moving the appliance, and send a clear photo if you can.

Write down any error code exactly as the display shows it. A Kenmore uses the code scheme of whoever built it, so a code can look familiar and still mean something different.
