Six Handy Things Every Bloomington Homeowner Should Know

Look up your model number before you call. Refrigerators usually have it on a label inside the fresh-food compartment; washers and dryers on the door opening or under the lid; and ranges along the oven door opening or inside the storage drawer.

Know where your shutoffs are. That means the water valves behind the refrigerator and washer, the gas valve on a gas dryer or range, and the breaker panel. If a valve is stuck from years of sitting, don't force it. Call me instead.

Keep the refrigerator door shut during an outage. A full refrigerator holds a safe temperature for about four hours, and a full freezer holds for about two days. A half-full freezer holds for closer to one day.

Protect a washer in a cold space. If your laundry is in an unheated garage or porch, water left in the hoses can freeze in a Minnesota winter and crack them. Unhook and drain the hoses if the room will sit below freezing.

Test your carbon monoxide alarm. Minnesota homes must have one, and it matters most near gas appliances. A good habit is to test it whenever you change the clocks.

Plug big appliances straight into the wall. Extension cords and power strips can overheat under the load a refrigerator, dryer, or range puts on them.

Houses, Condos, and Apartments

Bloomington has everything from 1950s ramblers to newer condos and apartment buildings, and the job changes a little with each. In a condo or apartment, a leaking washer can reach the neighbor below before you notice, so I treat a leak as urgent. Those buildings also tend to run the dryer vent a long way through a wall or ceiling, which makes airflow problems more common than in a house with an outside wall right behind the machine. In an older rambler, the surprise is often the supply side: shutoff valves that haven't been turned in thirty years.
