Six Things Every Maytag Washer Owner Should Know

Many newer Maytag washer model numbers begin with MV for a top-load or MH for a front-load, while older machines start with other letters. Read me the entire number, since it tells me the era.

On a top-load, press the lid all the way down before you give up. A lid that isn't fully closed can keep a washer from starting or spinning.

After the last load of the day, leave a front-load door ajar so the seal and drum can dry out. A closed, damp drum is where odors get started.

One heavy item, such as a comforter or an area rug, can throw a drum off balance. Washing it with a few towels often evens things out.

Tell me whether the agitator or drum still turned while the washer ran. A machine that moves but won't spin points to different parts than one that never moves at all.

A mechanical dial that clicks into place means an older machine, and a touchpad means a newer electronic one. Please tell me which you have, since I carry different parts for each.

How a Maytag Differs From a Whirlpool

Maytag started out in Newton, Iowa, in the 1890s, and for most of a century it built its own washers. It earned a name for machines that outlast their neighbors, with stout motors, sturdy transmissions, and parts meant for families running big loads often. Whirlpool Corporation bought the Maytag brand in 2006, and today's Maytag washers are engineered and built by Whirlpool. That doesn't make one a Whirlpool with a different badge. Maytag keeps its own model numbers, its own heavy-duty look, and on many models its own components, even where a platform or a part is shared. The era your washer comes from changes what I expect to find inside, so give me the model tag and I'll place it for you.

Older Top-Loads and the Transmission

One wear point worth knowing on an older top-load Maytag is the transmission, which drives both the agitator and the spin. I've replaced a lot of them, and it's often a smarter move than scrapping an otherwise solid machine. A grinding sound doesn't always mean the transmission, though. It's common enough that I check it early, but I confirm before I recommend anything. Use HE detergent only, in the quantity the manual lists, because regular detergent foams far too much in these machines and causes trouble that has nothing to do with a broken part. On HE models in particular, a failing control board is a common cause of error codes or a washer that simply isn't acting right. Write down the exact code before you call.

The model and serial tag is beneath the lid on a top-load Maytag, and just inside the door frame on a front-load one. Maytag also runs its own official parts and manual lookup, and checking it can show you a part is easier to find than you feared.

Quick Checks While You Wait

A few things are worth trying yourself, but only on a dry floor with nothing smoking, sparking, or flooding nearby. If any of that is happening, skip straight to calling me. Start at the shutoffs, because a washer that won't fill sometimes has a valve someone bumped closed. Check what's exposed and reachable without pulling the machine out or opening a panel, and if a hose is cracked, bulging, or steadily dripping, don't run the washer. A lopsided load is enough to make a healthy machine bang or refuse to spin, so spread out anything bunched up. Before you phone, jot down the code, how far into the cycle it quit, and whether water is left in the tub. That information speeds up my diagnosis more than poking around inside will.
