Maytag built its own washers independently for more than a century, starting in Newton, Iowa, back in the 1890s, and earned its name on machines made to outlast everything else on the market: heavier motors, sturdier transmissions, parts built for families running big, frequent loads. In 2006, Whirlpool Corporation bought the Maytag brand outright. Today's Maytag washers are engineered and built by Whirlpool Corporation, and newer models can share components with Whirlpool-branded machines, even though Maytag keeps its own lineup and its own heavy-duty reputation. Which era your washer comes from changes what I expect to find when I open it up, so send me the complete model number, and I'll tell you where it stands.

Maytag Washer Leaking Right Now?

Stop whatever cycle is running first. If the shutoff valves are somewhere you can reach without wading through water or getting near a wet outlet, close them; otherwise, leave that step for me. Don't test standing water near a plug, cord, or the control panel; clear the room instead of troubleshooting it yourself.

Smoke, sparking, or a burning smell means stop everything and get away from the machine. Call or text once the immediate danger has passed.

Owned by Whirlpool, Still Its Own Machine

A lot of people assume "owned by Whirlpool" means Maytag washers are just Whirlpools with a different badge. That's not quite right. Maytag keeps its own model numbers, its own heavier-duty design language, and on plenty of models its own distinct components even while sharing platforms and parts with Whirlpool-branded machines on the newer end of the lineup. Knowing which generation you've got matters before I ever touch a tool.

One wear point worth knowing about if you've got an older top-load Maytag: the transmission that drives the agitator and spin cycle. It's a well-understood repair I've done many times, and it's usually a better move than replacing an otherwise solid machine. Give me the model number, and I can usually tell you the generation and likely wear points before I'm standing in your laundry room.

Common Maytag Washer Problems I Fix

More than one failure can look identical from the outside, and the right answer depends on the actual machine in front of me. I diagnose before I recommend anything, so you know what failed and what it costs.

Won't Drain

If the cycle ends and water is still pooled in the bottom of the tub, or it stalls mid-wash without draining, a clogged or seized pump is usually behind it on a Maytag; that's the first thing I check.

Won't Spin

Everything else about the cycle runs normally, but the laundry comes out just as soaked as it went in, or the machine skips spinning altogether. On older Maytags, a worn-out bearing is usually why.

Won't Fill

Water barely trickles in, or doesn't show up at all; a stuck inlet valve is the usual explanation.

Leaking

Check the door gasket, the hose fittings, and underneath the cabinet — those are the three places water shows up first on a leaking Maytag.

Banging or Grinding During the Cycle

If the machine starts making a sound it never used to a rattle, a grind, a hard knock during spin — something inside the drum assembly has typically worked loose or worn through.

Won't Start

The display might light up or beep like it's working, but the drum never starts the wash; sometimes there's no response at all.

HE Odor or Residue

Newer Maytag high-efficiency washers use less water than older top-loaders, which leaves them more prone to detergent buildup and a lingering smell in the drum and door seal. Most of the time that's a cleaning problem, not a mechanical one.

Error Code or Erratic Behavior

On HE models especially, a failing control board is a frequent cause of error codes or a washer that just isn't acting right. Note the exact code before you call.

Which Maytag Washer Do You Have?

Maytag's lineup includes traditional top-load agitator washers, high-efficiency top-loaders without an agitator, and front-load models, and the repair approach differs for each. Tell me the loading style, the complete model number, and whether it's an older mechanical-timer machine or a newer electronic one, and I can usually tell you where things stand before I ever see it.

Finding the Maytag Model Number

The model and serial tag sits under the lid on a top-load Maytag, or just inside the door frame on a front-load model. Maytag maintains its own official parts and manual lookup, which is worth checking before assuming a part is hard to find.

Safe Checks Before You Schedule

A few things are worth a look on your own first, but only with a dry floor and nothing smoking, sparking, or actively flooding nearby. Skip straight to calling me if any of that's happening.

Start with the shutoffs. A washer that won't fill sometimes just has a valve someone bumped closed; check that before assuming a part failed.

A quick visual pass is fine; disassembly isn't. Look at whatever's exposed and reachable without pulling the machine out or opening a panel. Cracking, bulging, or steady dripping on a hose means don't run another load until I've seen it.

Loads matter more than people think. One heavy towel load thrown in off-balance is enough to make a perfectly fine washer bang or refuse to spin.

HE detergent isn't optional on HE machines. Regular detergent foams too much in a high-efficiency washer and creates problems that have nothing to do with a broken part.

Take notes, not action. Note the code, what stage of the cycle it quit in, and whether there's water left in the tub. That's the information that actually speeds up my diagnosis; poking around inside the machine doesn't.

Should I Repair or Replace My Maytag Washer?

Maytag's reputation for heavy-duty construction means a lot of these machines are worth fixing well past the point you'd give up on a cheaper washer. I've restored plenty of older top-load Maytags with a transmission swap that had years of life left in them. But it still comes down to the actual machine: what failed, whether the rest of it is holding up, and what the repair costs against a replacement.
