Dryer Warning Signs: Stop and Call
A scorched smell, visible sparking, or a cabinet that's too hot to touch means stop the dryer now and cut power at the breaker. Don't run another load hoping it clears up on its own.
If you smell gas near a gas dryer, skip calling me for a moment, get everyone outside, leave switches and phones alone, and call your gas utility or 911 from a safe distance before anything else.
Common Dryer Problems I Fix
The same complaint can point to more than one cause, so I ask a few questions and take a real look at the machine before I guess at a part.
Won't Heat Up
The drum spins and the cycle finishes, but everything comes out barely warmer than it went in. On an electric dryer, that usually points to the heating element; on a gas dryer, it's often the igniter or gas valve.
Takes Two or Three Cycles to Dry
Nothing looks broken, but you're running the same load twice. Often it's a vent restricted somewhere between the dryer and the outside wall, or a moisture sensor that's stopped reading correctly.
Won't Start
You hit start and get nothing, or a hum with no movement at all. Could be the door switch, the start switch, or something upstream of the motor.
Drum Doesn't Turn
The dryer powers on and you can hear the motor, but the drum sits still or spins loose without tumbling anything. That's usually a belt or a pulley.
New Noise
A squeal, thump, or grind that wasn't there last month, timed with the drum turning, almost always means a worn roller, bearing, or belt.
Shuts Off Mid-Cycle
The dryer runs fine, then stops on its own without warning. This could be a thermal safety switch tripping from restricted airflow or a control board issue.
Gas or Electric, Every Brand
Gas and electric dryers fail differently even when the symptom sounds identical, since they heat the air in completely different ways. Safe Checks Before You Schedule
None of this replaces a real diagnosis, but a couple of quick looks can save you a wasted trip. Skip all of it if there's any burning smell, sparking, or gas odor, and just call.
Empty the lint trap before you do anything else. More slow-drying complaints trace back to this than to any actual part failure.
Look at the vent hose behind the dryer. If you can see it's crushed, kinked, or come loose, that alone can explain long drying times.
Check both breakers if you've got an electric dryer. It runs off two separate circuits, so one can trip while the other doesn't — you'll get a drum that turns just fine with no heat at all.
Ask yourself if the load was too big. Packing the drum past a comfortable fit puts extra work on the belt and motor and can look like a real breakdown when it isn't one.
Note exactly what's happening before you call. Whether there's heat, any smell, and where in the cycle it stops all point toward a different part; the more detail you give me, the less guessing on my end.

The part and the installation work are both guaranteed for twelve months — full details are in the written warranty. Nights, weekends, and holidays cost the same as any other day.
Should I Repair or Replace My Dryer?
Dryers are usually the easier call of the two laundry machines — most failures come down to a single part, and most dryers are worth fixing well past ten years old. The math changes once you're looking at more than one system failing at the same time, or a part that's genuinely hard to find anymore.

How much is the service call?
$89, which covers the visit and full diagnosis. Any repair after that is a separate price I explain before I start.
Can you come today?
Some days work, some don't — it comes down to what's already booked. The fastest way to know is to call or text and ask directly.
Do you use manufacturer parts?
Whenever it's available, yes — the manufacturer part goes in first. If I have to substitute an aftermarket piece, you'll hear about it before it's installed.
What does the warranty cover?
Twelve months on the part I installed and the labor behind it. It's tied to that specific repair, not whatever else might go wrong with the machine later.
My dryer runs but doesn't dry. Is that the dryer or the vent?
Could be either. If it's heating, but clothes still come out damp, a restricted vent is one of the most common culprits — but I check both before assuming.

Monitor the clothes dryer closely so you can explain what it is and isn't doing. Record all error codes. You will save the serviceman's time and your money.
When the dryer is heating but not drying, remove the vent and run a load with the window open. If the clothes dry within the normal time, the dryer is operating properly. The problem is in the venting system. Clean your vent thoroughly and reattach it.
Hard dryer vents are a must; if you have a dryer fire, those flexible vents can't contain the flames. Anything flammable near the dryer or vent could catch fire, leading to a bad day.
For dryers with computers, if the dryer is unresponsive to button presses, try unplugging it for 5 minutes, then plugging it back in. Sometimes, the dryer will reboot and work just fine.
When painting with any chemicals in your home, remember this: clothes dryers suck in fresh air and blow the wet air out the vent to the outside of the house. Chemical fumes can enter the dryer, and the heat element burns them, causing an unpleasant odor. Getting rid of that burnt smell can be challenging, but it is not impossible.
Often, when using dryer sheets, I find them where they should not be in the dryer. Tie the dryer sheet to a belt loop of your pants or snag it in a zipper. You can also tie the dryer sheet around a wash rag. You can find it later without needing a service technician's help.
Think before you throw away a dryer. I have found keys, credit cards, money, and even a diamond ring left inside dryers that people were about to get rid of. Seeing folks throw dryers away at the curb without checking them first always makes me wince.
Using a dryer before bed or leaving the house is risky, as accidents are more likely.
Check on your pets before closing the door and turning on the dryer.
Overloading the dryer risks burning out the heating element, thermostat, or thermal fuse.
If your clothes dryer takes too long, look inside the drum with the door open. Check whether a dryer sheet is stuck to the back vent, which could restrict airflow. I've seen this more than once.
Every adult should be able to find the clearly labeled circuit breaker for the clothes dryer in an emergency. Practice this beforehand to avoid a service call.
Shake out your clothes before putting them in the dryer to prevent wrinkles, and avoid overloading the dryer to ensure even drying.
It's best to clean a clothes dryer vent of lint before you start a load. Sometimes, dryer lint is sucked into the vent while the dryer is running, which can cause the dryer to malfunction and require repair.
If you can see behind the clothes dryer and notice that the dryer vent tube is too long or kinked, restricting airflow, shorten it. Every little bit helps. Every bend or turn slows down the drying time of clothes.
