45 Years of Fixing Dryers
A dryer that spins but gives no heat, takes two cycles to finish one load, or goes silent when you press start can often be narrowed down over the phone before I ever arrive. I'm Larry, and after 45 years of working on these machines, gas and electric, I know the handful of places they tend to quit.
Gas and electric dryers look alike from the front, but they make heat in completely different ways, so the first thing I ask is which one you have. An electric model heats with a coil element and a couple of safety devices that protect it. A gas model lights a burner, which adds an ignitor and a valve to the list of parts that can wear out. The drum, belt, blower, and motor underneath are much the same on both.
Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore, GE, LG, Samsung, and Amana all show up on my service calls. I'm not tied to any one maker, so I'll tell you what I see on your machine rather than what a brand would like me to say. Smell Something Burning? Stop the Dryer
A scorched smell, sparks, or a cabinet too hot to touch means the cycle is over. Please shut it off and unplug it if the cord is within easy reach and the floor is dry, then call me before you run it again. Heat that builds up inside a dryer can ignite lint, so never wait out a burning smell.
If you see smoke or flames inside the drum, leave the door shut, because opening it feeds the fire air. Get everyone out and call 911. A gas smell near a gas dryer is its own emergency: get everyone outside before you do anything else, phone your gas utility from there, and call me after they've cleared it.
Common Dryer Problems I Fix
Most dryer calls begin with clothes that come out wrong. They're damp after a full cycle, or hot but still wet, or they need a second run to finish, and those complaints point to restricted airflow at least as often as they point to a bad part. When there's no heat at all, but the drum still tumbles,
I'm looking at the heating element and its thermal fuse on an electric dryer, or the ignitor and gas valve on a gas one. Sometimes you press start and hear a hum while nothing turns, which tells me the motor is working and something between it and the drum, usually the belt, has let go.
A thump, squeal, or rumble with each rotation usually points to a worn roller or idler pulley, and it's worth fixing before the part takes the belt with it. If the dryer quits in the middle of a load, a safety thermostat is usually doing its job after the machine overheats, so I check the vent and lint path before I blame the thermostat. Dead controls, a door switch that won't register, and a drum light that stays on all the way to smaller electrical parts. Since two dryers can fail in similar ways for different reasons, I check yours with my own gauges before I name a part or a price.

Six Things Worth Knowing About Your Dryer
Rinse the lint screen under the tap occasionally. Dryer sheets leave a waxy film that clogs the mesh where you can't see it. If water pools on the screen instead of passing through, scrub it with dish soap and a soft brush, let it dry fully, and put it back.
Time a normal load. A regular load should dry in roughly an hour or less. If yours keeps needing a second cycle, the trouble is more likely a clogged vent than a failed part.
Stand outside while it runs. Watch the vent flap on the outside wall. It should swing wide with a strong push of warm air. A weak puff, or a flap that barely moves, means lint is blocking the path somewhere between the machine and the wall.
Don't overstuff the drum. Clothes need room to tumble, and air needs room to move. A packed drum dries slowly, strains the belt and motor, and leaves the middle of the load damp even when the outside feels dry.
Be careful with laundry that has had oil on it. Rags or clothes with cooking oil, gasoline, or similar residue can heat up and ignite in a dryer. Wash them more than once, then hang them to dry instead of tumbling them.
Don't run it when you're out or asleep. If something goes wrong with airflow or heat, you want to be there to notice. Let the cycle finish, then leave.
When You Call About Your Dryer

A model number helps, and you'll usually find it on a label inside the door frame, but you don't need it to ask if I can help. How long it has been acting up, and whether anything changed first, such as a new vent hose, a move, or a power outage, lets me narrow things down while we're still on the phone.

Your $89 pays for the trip out and a proper diagnosis. I'll price what I find separately, and you'll hear that number before I pick up a tool. Genuine manufacturer parts come first. If one has been discontinued, I explain the substitute and wait for your okay before it goes in.
My parts and labor are covered by a twelve-month written warranty. Evenings and weekends cost the same as a Tuesday morning.
Should I Repair or Replace My Dryer?
Dryers are among the simplest appliances to repair, and a belt, element, ignitor, or thermal fuse costs a small fraction of a new machine. Replacement starts to make sense when the drum or its bearings are worn out, when the cabinet is rusting through, or when one expensive repair has followed another. I'll set the repair number beside the price of a comparable new dryer and tell you which one I'd choose if it were mine.

Dryer Repair Questions
Gas or electric: do you work on both? Yes, and I'm comfortable with either. Which one you own changes what I ask on the phone, because the heat comes from a different part in each.
How much does a visit cost? It's a flat $89, which includes diagnosing the issue. I quote any repair afterward before work begins.
Can you come out today? Sometimes, on short notice, but not every day, and I won't promise a time I can't keep. Call or text, and you'll get a straight answer about where my day stands.
My dryer runs but doesn't dry. Is it the dryer or the vent? Very often it's the vent. A clogged line can make a healthy dryer act broken, so I test airflow first. There's no sense replacing a part when lint is the real culprit.
Are the parts genuine? Yes, I reach for original manufacturer parts first. If one has been discontinued, I explain the substitute and let you decide before installing anything.
Does the warranty cover everything on the dryer? A full year on the part I install and the labor to install it. Any other part that wears out later is a separate matter.

Monitor the clothes dryer closely so you can explain what it is and isn't doing. Record all error codes. You will save the serviceman's time and your money.
Hard dryer vents are a must; if you have a dryer fire, those flexible vents can't contain the flames. Anything flammable near the dryer or vent could catch fire, leading to a bad day.
For dryers with computers, if the dryer is unresponsive to button presses, unplug it for 5 minutes, then plug it back in. Sometimes, the dryer will reboot and work just fine.
When painting with any chemicals in your home, remember this: clothes dryers suck in fresh air and blow the wet air out the vent to the outside of the house. Chemical fumes can enter the dryer, and the heating element burns them, causing an unpleasant odor. Getting rid of that burnt smell can be challenging, but it is not impossible.
Often, when using dryer sheets, I find them where they should not be in the dryer. Tie the dryer sheet to a belt loop of your pants or snag it in a zipper. You can also tie the dryer sheet around a wash rag. You can find it later without needing a service technician's help.
Think before you throw away a dryer. I have found keys, credit cards, money, and even a diamond ring left inside dryers that people were about to get rid of. Seeing folks throw dryers away at the curb without checking them first always makes me wince.
Using a dryer before bed or leaving the house is risky, as accidents are more likely.
Check on your pets before you close the door and turn on the dryer.
Every adult should be able to find the clearly labeled circuit breaker for the clothes dryer in an emergency. Practice this beforehand to avoid a service call.
