Kenmore doesn't build its own washers. It's a name Sears put on machines other companies manufactured, and for washers, that's almost always Whirlpool or LG. The two use different drive systems and fail in different ways, so knowing which one built yours changes how I diagnose it before I ever open a panel. Tell me the complete model number and what the washer is doing, and I'll confirm which one you have and whether I service it.

Kenmore Washer Leaking Right Now?

Pause the cycle before anything else. Only go for the shutoff valves if you can reach them on a dry floor; skip it if that means stepping in water or getting near a wet outlet or cord. A wet floor and live electricity don't mix, so if water's crept anywhere near a plug or the control panel, leave it alone and clear the room instead of troubleshooting it yourself.

Built by Whirlpool or Built by LG? Why It Matters

A Kenmore washer built on a Whirlpool platform tends to share Whirlpool's typical wear points — belts, water inlet valves, lid or door lock assemblies, timers on older models. A Kenmore washer built on an LG platform is more often direct-drive, with a different suspension and motor setup and its own pattern of failures.

I don't guess which one you have from the outside. The full model tag settles it, along with what the washer sounds and acts like when it runs — often I can tell how tired a washer is, or point toward what's failing, just from the noise it's making before I open anything. Bring me the label and describe the sound, and I can usually narrow it down to one of two options before the visit.

Common Kenmore Washer Problems I Fix

The same symptom can point to more than one cause, and the likely cause can differ depending on whether your Kenmore was built by Whirlpool or LG. I diagnose the actual machine before recommending a repair, so you know what failed and what the work costs.

Won't Drain

Water sits in the tub at the end of the cycle, or the wash stops partway through with standing water still inside.

Won't Spin

The cycle runs its course, but clothes come out heavy and wet, or the spin step never kicks in.

Won't Start

You press the controls and get some response — a light, a beep — but the wash cycle itself never actually kicks off, or nothing happens at all.

Leaking

You're finding water somewhere it shouldn't be — seeping from the door seal, dripping at a hose connection, collecting under the soap dispenser, or forming a puddle under the machine itself.

Shaking, Banging, or New Noise

The washer walks across the floor, bangs during the spin cycle, or has picked up a grinding or squealing sound it didn't used to make.

Won't Fill

The tub barely fills or doesn't fill at all, the water shuts off before the cycle's ready for it, or you're looking at an error code that points to water flow.

Door or Lid Stays Locked

The cycle's over, but a front-load door won't release, or a top-load lid stays down longer than it should—usually a sign the machine hasn't finished draining yet, even though it looks done.

Error Code on the Display

Kenmore washers show whichever code scheme belongs to the company that actually built them, so a Whirlpool-platform code and an LG-platform code don't mean the same thing even if they look similar. Write down the complete code exactly as shown.

Which Kenmore Washer Do You Have?

Kenmore's put its name on just about every washer configuration over the years — front-loaders, standard top-loaders, HE top-loaders — built by either company. The lock system, the controls, even how easy the machine is to physically get into can differ quite a bit from one to the next. Give me the loading style and the full model number, and I can tell you where things stand.

One more thing that helps: if it's stacked, wedged into a closet, or squeezed under a counter, say so ahead of time. I'd rather know what I'm dealing with before I show up than figure it out on your laundry room floor.

Finding the Kenmore Model Number

The tag is usually under the lid on a top-load washer, or around the door opening on a front-load model — check what's visible without moving or disassembling anything. Because Kenmore is a Sears name rather than a manufacturer, the model number follows Sears' own numbering, not Whirlpool's or LG's — so it won't work directly in either manufacturer's official parts lookup. Kenmore's own manual search is built for it. For anything tied to a manufacturer warranty, recall, or Sears-authorized service, that belongs with Kenmore Customer Care.

Safe Checks Before You Schedule

A few things are worth a look on your own before we set a time, but only if the floor is dry and nothing is burning, sparking, or actively flooding nearby. If any of that's going on, skip straight to calling me instead.

Check the valves. If nothing's filling, both the hot and cold lines feeding the washer need to actually be turned on — worth a quick look before anything else.

Eyes only, hands off. Whatever hoses and connections you can see without moving the machine or reaching behind it, take a look. If one looks worn, bulging, or is dripping on its own, that washer needs to sit unused until I get there.

Check the load. A severely unbalanced or overloaded wash can cause shaking or failure to spin.

Use the right detergent. Most Kenmore HE washers need HE detergent in the amount the manual specifies; too much causes its own problems.

Jot it down. Whatever code showed up, what the machine was doing mid-cycle when it quit, and whether it left water behind the more of that you remember, the less guessing I have to do once I'm there.

Whatever part goes in carries a full year of coverage, labor and all — the complete warranty terms spell out exactly what that means. And no, a holiday, a weekend, or the drive out to your place doesn't cost you anything extra.

Should I Repair or Replace My Kenmore Washer?

Honestly, it comes down to more than one thing: how the rest of the machine is holding up, what specifically broke, whether I can even get the part anymore, and what a repair would cost next to buying new. The washer's age alone doesn't settle it. I've fixed twenty-year-old Kenmores that had plenty of life left, and told people with a five-year-old machine it wasn't worth it because it comes down to actual condition, not the birthday on the tag.
