Five Things Every LG Owner Should Know

If an LG washer shows an OE code, look for the small pump filter door near the bottom front corner. Put towels and a shallow pan down first, because the filter holds more water than you'd expect, and turn it slowly.

When the ThinQ app won't start a cycle, check whether Remote Start is turned on at the washer itself. On many LG models, the app can only start a load after that is switched on, so a quiet washer isn't always a broken one.

Wipe the rubber door bellows after the last load and leave the door open a crack. Water sitting in the fold causes odor and wears the rubber over time.

When an LG dryer quits early and the clothes are still damp, wipe the metal sensor strips inside the drum with a damp cloth. Dirty strips can fool the dryer into thinking the load is done.

Check your oven's accuracy with an oven thermometer. Set the oven to 350, wait 20 minutes after the preheat signal, and tell me what the thermometer reads. A big gap tells me where to start.

Why an LG Isn't an American Washer

LG started as GoldStar in South Korea, a name you may still find stamped inside older units, and it took the LG name in 1995. Its washers and dryers are engineered differently from American designs, so I don't treat an LG as a Whirlpool or Maytag wearing a different badge.

Most LG front-load washers spin the drum with a motor mounted straight to it, which LG calls Direct Drive, where most other washers use a belt and pulley. That makes them quiet and leaves fewer parts to wear out. When the motor or its hall sensor fails, though, the repair looks nothing like a belt job, and a technician used to belt-driven washers can easily misdiagnose it. LG's ThinQ models add Wi-Fi and app alerts, which are handy until the app becomes one more thing that misbehaves.

What an LG Washer Code Is Telling Me

LG washers are good at telling you what's wrong if you know how to read the display. An OE code means the water isn't draining, usually from a clogged pump filter or a failed drain pump. UE means the load is unbalanced. Redistributing the clothes often fixes it, and worn suspension rods are the likely cause if it keeps happening. LE means the motor overloaded and locked up, which often points to the Direct-Drive motor or its hall sensor, and dE means the door isn't latching, usually due to a worn latch or a bellows out of position. A front-load LG that suddenly shakes hard or holds standing water usually has a failed drain pump, a cracked bellows, or a worn drum bearing.

LG Dryers and Sensor Dry

LG dryers lean on Sensor Dry, moisture sensors inside the drum that decide when a load is truly dry. When they get dirty or fail, the dryer either shuts off too early and leaves clothes damp or runs long after the load is done. Tumbling cold, a high-pitched squeal from a worn drum roller, and refusing to start after a power surge are the other complaints I hear most. I don't stop at swapping the obvious part. I also check the vent path and the internal thermistors, since a dryer that runs hot for the wrong reason is a fire risk worth taking seriously.

LG Ovens and Ranges

LG ranges come in gas and electric. Which one do you have? The calls I get most are ovens that stay cold, ovens that bake unevenly or miss the set temperature, doors that stay locked after a self-clean, and control panels that go dark. I check the heating parts and the controls before I suggest a repair, and I'll tell you honestly if a fix doesn't make sense.
